21st century style for historic Bath

Jane Austen would have enjoyed afternoon tea and centuries later a modern version is raising money for charity in the city she made home.

The legendary author lived in Bath from 1801 to 1806, and this year is the 200th anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice.

Now chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council is drawing on the period for a special fund-raising event.

Councillor Rob Appleyard is holding an ‘Elegance in the Afternoon Charity Fashion Show’ to raise money for his chosen charities – The Royal United Hospital’s Forever Friends Cancer Care Appeal, The Carer’s Centre and Julian House Bath.

He said: “Afternoon tea was very much a part of Regency life and given it’s a special year for one of Bath’s most famous residents, this is an ideal opportunity to hold an afternoon tea in a location which was around when Jane Austen walked our streets.

“We have already had support from businesses and we are pleased to announce that there are plenty of opportunities for more local businesses to get involved from sponsorship through to donating prizes.”

It will be held in the sumptuous surroundings of the Banqueting Room at Bath’s Guildhall on April 27 from 3.30pm to 6.30pm.

The Event starts with a glass of Champagne on arrival, Champagne provided by Great Western Wine, followed by delicious afternoon tea provided by local caterers Dine with Style.

Shops taking part in the fashion show include Mimi Noor, East, and many more, jewellery is being provided by Bath Aqua Glass, with printing support from Ralph Allen Press.

Councillor Appleyard said: “The event is a chance for guests to dress up and there will be a prize for the most elegantly dressed guest.

The Fashion show will take place while afternoon tea is being served and the event will close with a raffle and auction to raise money for the Chairman's charities.

Themes for the fashion show will range from Summer 2013 colours and trends Something to celebrate – outfits for weddings, celebrations, parties, etc. Classics – items every wardrobe needs, Jewellery and accessories. If local shops are interested in the event the organisers would be delighted to hear from you.
